Common questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, ask us.
What is the difference between junk and salvage in California?
Salvage means the vehicle was wrecked or damaged to the point it was written off but could be repaired and re-registered after inspection. Junk (non-repairable) means it can never be registered again and can only be used for parts or scrap.
Do I have to give up my plates?
Yes. Plates must be surrendered when a vehicle is declared junk or salvage, and the REG 488C records what was done with them.
Will junking my car stop the registration fees?
Yes. Once the junk or salvage declaration is filed, registration fees and penalties stop accruing on the record.
Can I file salvage if the title is lost?
A completed REG 227 serves as proof of ownership in place of the missing title.
