No Renewal Notice? You Can Still Renew.

The renewal notice is a convenience, not a requirement. The DMV mails it roughly 60 days before your expiration date, and plenty of them never arrive: a move, a mail problem, a notice sent to a lender or a prior address. Your registration still expires on the date printed on your registration card, and penalties still start the day after, so the missing notice is a reason to act, not a reason to wait.

What to use instead

A registration card from the last three years, or a REG 156 (Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents), works as the renewal support document. What you lose without the notice is the DMV's one-page summary of what is attached to your record: whether a smog certification is due this cycle, whether an insurance flag is on file, and the exact fee total. That is the part we pull for you from the record itself.

How to renew without it

Send us a photo of your registration card (or just the plate and VIN) and a photo of your insurance card. We check the record for a smog requirement or hold, quote the exact total, and process the renewal after you pay. If smog is due, get it done at any STAR station first; the result transmits electronically and the renewal goes through the same day.

Fix the notice for next year

If the notice went to an old address, file a change of address with the DMV (free, online). If a lender holds your title, the notice may go to them; ask them to forward it or update the mailing address on the record. And if you renew through us, we keep your expiration date on file and remind you 60 and 14 days out, notice or no notice.

Handled without the line

Skip the line — text your plate to (714) 829-0009 or start your order online. We pull your exact DMV total for free before you commit.

Common questions

Can I renew my registration without the renewal notice?

Yes. A registration card from the last three years or a REG 156 works as the support document. The notice just makes it easier to see whether smog or insurance is required.

Why did I not get my renewal notice?

Most often a move without a DMV change of address, a notice sent to a lienholder, or ordinary mail loss. The DMV also holds notices when the record has a returned-mail flag.

Does a missing notice give me more time?

No. The expiration date on your registration card controls, and penalties start the day after it regardless of whether a notice arrived.
