Towed for Expired Tags? Renew Today, Get the Car Out Today.

California lets an officer tow a vehicle whose registration has been expired for more than six months (Vehicle Code 22651(o)), and the tow yard will not release it until you show proof of current registration, a valid license and insurance. Storage is billed by the day, so every day you spend figuring out the DMV costs you again at the yard. The order of operations is: renew first, then release, then pay the yard.

Step 1: get the registration current, today

You do not need the car in front of you to renew it. Send us the plate (and a photo of any registration card or notice you still have). We pull the record, which after six months will carry penalties and very possibly a smog requirement, and tell you the exact total. If smog is due, the car has to pass at a STAR station before the renewal can post; the yard will usually let you arrange a smog inspection or you can request a one-day moving permit from the DMV for that purpose. Once the renewal posts, the DMV record shows current the same day, and we give you a printed confirmation and registration card.

Step 2: get the release

The agency that ordered the tow (police or sheriff, not the yard) issues the release. Bring your ID, the current registration, and insurance. Some agencies charge a release fee. Then take the release to the yard.

Step 3: pay the yard and drive out

Tow plus daily storage plus any administrative fee. Yards can start lien-sale proceedings after 30 days, so do not let it sit.

What if you cannot afford the whole total right now

Registration with penalties on an older car is often a few hundred dollars; the yard bill grows faster than that. Our checkout offers buy now, pay later options at payment, which lets you get the car released today and spread the registration cost. The exact figure comes first, free, so you can decide.

Common questions

Can my car be towed just for expired registration?

Yes, once the registration has been expired for more than six months, under Vehicle Code 22651(o). Before six months you are looking at a citation, not a tow.

Do I have to renew before the tow yard releases the car?

Yes. A vehicle towed for expired registration is released only on proof of current registration, plus a valid license and insurance. Renewing is what clears the reason for the tow.

How fast can the registration be made current?

If nothing is blocking the record, the same business day you pay. If smog is due, the car must pass first, which usually adds a day.

Is there a holding period on an expired-registration tow?

No. Unlike a 30-day impound for an unlicensed or suspended driver, an expired-registration tow has no mandatory hold; you can recover the car as soon as it is registered and the fees are paid.
